The art of Bastiaan van Stenis (South Africa, 1981) is a triumph of mixed media, using paint, glue, assembly and canvas, among other things. This creates versatile, precarious compositions that bend the image surface. His subjects stem from his own living environment, the natural world and his human and animal companions. These are combined with imaginary elements to form a curious world. In his expressionist works, Van Stenis uses spotted pastel colors against backgrounds of flat, muted tones. Recurring in his compositions are the dog’s motives and the interaction and contradiction between being exposed and being naked.
