11 Aug 1743 – 1808 Brandes was a Dutch artist, taxidermist and missionary. He arrived in Cape Town in 1787 on his way back from a mission in Batavia. He has been praised by the Rijksmuseum for his extraordinary watercolours found in two sketchbooks which were left to them after his death in 1808.
